We drove through Minnesota and Wisconsin and are now in Chicago Illinois. This will probably be the last post of our road trip. We head back toward NC tomorrow and will be on the interstates with no blog-worthy picture taking opportunities. Thank you for viewing this blog!
Deadwood SD was established in 1876 during the Black Hills gold rush. Miners found gold in a narrow canyon, and the area became known as "Deadwood Gulch" because of the many dead trees that lined the canyon walls at the time. Some of the early town residents included Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. Deadwood is the only city in the US to be named a National Historic Landmark.
In the Black Hills of South Dakota rests the Crazy Horse Memorial, welcome center, and museum, paying tribute to the Native American warrior. Crazy Horse is best known for fighting George Armstrong Custer at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. The sculpture was started in 1948 by Korczak Ziolkowski and is a work in progress, being continued by Ziolkowski's wife and children.
