Today we drove fromTennessee through Kentucky and Illinois to Missouri. We stopped in St. Louis to see The Gateway Arch, a 630-foot monument clad in stainless steel and built in the form of a flattened arch. It is the tallest man-made monument in the United States. I had planned to go to the top until the ticket seller asked "is anyone in your party claustrophobic?" and pointed to the vehicle that would take us to the top. It was a tiny, tiny module that we would share with 4 other people (see 6th picture below). Did I mention how tiny it was? Needless to say I chose not to cram myself into a death trap with strangers just for the view. Onward to South Dakota.
